Monument Valley

Moving between Moab, Utah (near Arches and Canyonlands National Parks) and Kenab, Utah (base camp for visiting Bryce and Zion National Parks), we stopped to catch sunset at Monument valley – where John Ford and John Wayne liked to shoot movies.
Here are the typical shots you see of the mittens and mesas.

But because we were on a private photo tour, we got to go down the back roads and see things from a different angle.  Out tour guide was a Navajo named Jimmy and he was great - showing us the best spots to take pictures and see the sights.  Here are some of the other areas we saw.

We also saw some petroglyphs, which are several thousand years old.

Looks like the paleo-artist made a mistake on this one and scratched it out.

Of course, I always make new friends wherever I go.  Here’s my new friend, a guy named Duke.  He looks familiar but I can’t quite place him.
